Kiwi Garages Book Excerpts 5

Before I arrived, Phil had Upcycled items  to make automotive artwork one-off pieces.

Phil is highly creative. Between repairing family heirlooms and broken stuff, he keeps by making automotive art out of scrap metal.

Initially, he scavenged bins in bicycle shops and garages for sprockets and chains and other discarded bric-a-brac, which he turned into lamps such things as lamps, clocks, garden hose reel holders, racing trophies and signs.

'I sold them on Trade Me at first, he says, but now I sell them on my website.'

Phil's hands seem to have a life of their own and need to be constantly doing something.

As we talk, those hands have been using two pairs of pliers to transform a fork into a fantastic little stand for my mobile phone.

He has an amazing capacity for reinvention, a handy trait in the modern world where people can lose their livelihood with a stranger's mouse click.

I leave him preparing his van to drive to Kaiapoi to pick up a broken grandfather clock and, no pun intended, I'd put good money on it running like clockwork next week.
